About Department

The Department of Science and Humanities is a primal department which consists of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English disciplines. All the disciplines in the department exist as a separate division and maintain individual identities. The varied disciplines provide the students with the knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Environmental Science fundamentals. Developing moral behaviour among the students, utilizing human resources and coordinating academic responsibilities are the exclusive potentials of the department.

The department accomplishes transforming young aspiring minds into determined freshman engineers through Outcome Based Education. Besides, the department teaches students a positive ethos through Value-Based Education.

Dr. M.A. Neelakantan, Professor & Head, who has academic excellence and research experience for 38 years, leads the department with 30 highly qualified, experienced and goal-oriented members with specializations in various fields.

Chemistry Lab:

The Chemistry lab has cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities that give students interested in the intersection of chemistry, engineering, and environmental sciences access to research opportunities, tools, and technical support. For first-year students, there are courses in the engineering chemistry and environmental science labthat encompass evaluating water quality parameters and using instruments to analyze contaminants. BOD, residual chlorine analysis, metal ion analysis and other investigations on water quality monitoring have been conducted in the chemistry lab. The laboratory complies with all standards for chemical safety. Third-year and final-year students use the laboratory for their project works.

Major instrumental equipment includes:

  • Water analysis kit
  • pH meter
  • Conductivity meter
  • Turbidimeter
  • BOD incubator
  • Flame Photometer
  • Spectrophotometer

Chemistry Research Centre

The Chemistry Research Centre (CRC) was established in 2007 to develop the Research activities in the department. The infrastructural and equipment facilities have been supported by various funded projects (BRNS, DST-SERB and CSIR) worth Rs. 1.75 Crore. A group of well-recognized faculty members with expertise in spectroscopy, electrochemistry, crystal growth, biological activities and computational chemistry has maintained the centre. Workshops, seminars and conferences are conducted regularly to explain the functioning and applications of the instrumentsto the students of various institutions. Anna University, Chennai has approved the Departmentof Chemistry as a recognized Research centre for doing a PhD. Fourteen doctoral students were awarded from this centre.

Equipment Facilities

  1. FTIR spectrophotometer
  2. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography
  3. UV-Visible Spectrophotomèter with water circulation bath
  4. Spectrofluorometer
  5. Electromagnet 11K Gauss and power supply for Gouy method
  6. Electrochemical workstation with Spectro electrochemistry setup

Physics Lab

Our physics laboratory provides hands-on learning experiences for students to explore and apply fundamental concepts in physics. Our lab allows students to engage in real-world experiments and research projects. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to fostering a collaborative and stimulating learning environment where students can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The laboratory environment facilitates the students to engage in project-based learning, which induces a culture of innovation.

English Lab

English language lab facilitates the students in enhancing their English language skills. Our lab was furnished with air-conditioned and high-processor systems. We have Anna University recommend softwares like Globarena, Orel talk, and Clarity with audio and video lectures for the professionals. Language lab helps professionals clear the Linguaskill examination, IELTS, and TOEFL with qualified faculty members. Our dedicated faculty members prepare professionals for placement and incorporate soft skills through soft skill trainers. We are an authorized center for conducting the Linguaskill examination offered by Cambridge University.

Chemistry

The chemistry discipline nurture scientific bent of mind in our students, guide them and mould them into responsible Engineers. The dynamic faculty members involved in teaching and research activities and has received funded project amount from reputed funding agencies like DST, BRNS & CSIR. The thrust areas of research are organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, computational chemistry and environmental studies. Solar material, sensor material, biomaterial, and water analysis are the interested topics of research. Chemistry faculty members have a vibrant research program which includes all frontier areas of research. Visual teaching/learning aids and learning resource materials are available and our chemistry laboratories are well-equipped. We have organized several conferences and workshops as extension activities. The Chemistry Research Centre of the department is recognized and approved by Anna University, Chennai.

English

The target of the discipline of English is to foster excellent skill among the students to communicate in English. Honing soft skills and communication skill is the need of the hour to face this competitive world. The diligent faculty members train the students in an iconic, feel-at- home, learning environment to perform efficiently in the campus, as well as the future work places. Students gain incredible communication skill through various learning activities in the classroom and the Language Laboratory. Students are also trained and provided with good opportunities to get through valuable English Proficiency Exams like BEC (Business English Certification), IELTS and NPTEL (IIT Madras Certification) etc.

Mathematics

The core objectives of the department are to impart students with logical thinking, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills; to equip them with more technological skills and scientific computing techniques based on mathematical methods; to introduce realistic application of Mathematics in related sciences; and to enable the students to appreciate the intrinsic aspects of mathematics. The faculties of Mathematics are widening the vistas of rich knowledge to UG and PG students and deepening their aptitude in Graph Theory, Operation Research, Queuing Theory, Random Process, Mathematical transformations, Differential equations, Calculus etc., They play a vital role in building students’ confidence and making them proficient in problem solving capability. Students are motivated to practice aptitude related problems through an online portal (Skill rack), by which students can improve their problem solving skills (which helps them to perform well in competitive exams) and programming skills.

Physics

Experienced and energetic faculty members are passionately involved in teaching and research activities related to Physics. They guide the students in Applied Physics, Semiconductor Physics, Solid State Devices and Materials Science. The ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering physics problems, the ability to, conduct, analyze and interpret experiments in engineering physics are inculcated among the students. The research work is progressing in the field of crystallography, crystal growth, thin films and nano materials. The spacious and well set Physics laboratory helps the students to gain thorough knowledge about the experiments. The members of Physics are working diligently towards fostering a scientific temperament and motivating students to do virtual lab also.
