About Department
The Department of Science and Humanities is a primal department which consists of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English disciplines. All the disciplines in the department exist as a separate division and maintain individual identities. The varied disciplines provide the students with the knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Environmental Science fundamentals. Developing moral behaviour among the students, utilizing human resources and coordinating academic responsibilities are the exclusive potentials of the department.
The department accomplishes transforming young aspiring minds into determined freshman engineers through Outcome Based Education. Besides, the department teaches students a positive ethos through Value-Based Education.
Dr. M.A. Neelakantan, Professor & Head, who has academic excellence and research experience for 38 years, leads the department with 30 highly qualified, experienced and goal-oriented members with specializations in various fields.

Laboratories:
Chemistry Lab:
The Chemistry lab has cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities that give students interested in the intersection of chemistry, engineering, and environmental sciences access to research opportunities, tools, and technical support. For first-year students, there are courses in the engineering chemistry and environmental science labthat encompass evaluating water quality parameters and using instruments to analyze contaminants. BOD, residual chlorine analysis, metal ion analysis and other investigations on water quality monitoring have been conducted in the chemistry lab. The laboratory complies with all standards for chemical safety. Third-year and final-year students use the laboratory for their project works.
Major instrumental equipment includes:
- Water analysis kit
- pH meter
- Conductivity meter
- Turbidimeter
- BOD incubator
- Flame Photometer
- Spectrophotometer
Chemistry
The chemistry discipline nurture scientific bent of mind in our students, guide them and mould them into responsible Engineers. The dynamic faculty members involved in teaching and research activities and has received funded project amount from reputed funding agencies like DST, BRNS & CSIR. The thrust areas of research are organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, computational chemistry and environmental studies. Solar material, sensor material, biomaterial, and water analysis are the interested topics of research. Chemistry faculty members have a vibrant research program which includes all frontier areas of research. Visual teaching/learning aids and learning resource materials are available and our chemistry laboratories are well-equipped. We have organized several conferences and workshops as extension activities. The Chemistry Research Centre of the department is recognized and approved by Anna University, Chennai.
